Topic: TextMate for Windows? It's pretty close...

I tried this because I really like TextMate on my Mac and I have grown to hate all the crap that jEdit throws at me on Windows. So far it's way faster than jEdit (not a hard target to beat really) and since it supports TextMate's bundles and themes there's already a lot of functionality built-in, or you can look for add-ons the community has contributed (some Textmate bundles require Cygwin though in order to function properly on Windows).

It's really nice for an app that hasn't hit a full release yet, and I'm really considering purchasing it when it goes final. For those of you on Windows who want TextMate or are just tired with the other options, try it smile

Nice! Glad someone finally did this. I don't use Windows, but now I can share those lovely TextMate bundles with friends who are on the other side. smile

A built in version control system, that sounds intriguing. I look forward to the day when version control is almost invisible.

I never understood the jedit love. It's a very clunky program. Sure it has functionality up the wazoo, but it's not at all pleasant, intuitive or efficient to use.

I wish we'd get a TextMate-a-like for Linux.

Yeah jEdit does have tons of functionality and plugins, which is very nice. However, a text editor with 3 files open shouldn't take forever to restore from a minimized state when I've got a gig of RAM. I also can't stand its font rendering; Consolas is a very nice font on Windows and Macs but it looks like ass in jEdit.

e is written in wxWidgets, which is cross-platform, and the developer has said he's open to porting to Linux.

In the meantime on Linux you can try Scribes which some people have compared to TextMate.

I have to agree, E Text Editor seems to be the best choice to me. I tried jEdit and simply didn't like it, it just isn't "nice"
Also tried Intype recently, something that I may revisit once it is further developed.
The Alpha release shows promise but isn't really usable imo.

Is there a way to get E to open ruby files with the Ruby on Rails syntax highlighting as the default? Anytime I open a rails file, I have to switch it over.

I haven't even turned my windows machine on in months.
But the last text-editors I was using before getting head over heels for textMate was inType, as well as the Crimson Editor.

I havent tried netbeans for ruby to be honest. For java, i prefer eclipse, and I think cause I am used to eclipse, I tend to nitpick at netbean's differences. Its amazing for doing jsp though, a lot easier to get things running than with eclipse. I did try radrails, as I used to use aptana for web stuff alot, Jaxer especially. But I found it wasnt really speeding up my process, and I wanted to learn a lot of the commands. I like the lightweight of a text editor as supposed to an IDE as well smile

my buddy downloaded intype. Its pretty nice, much faster than e. However, it misses the x's to close tabs, have to right click and then close to close em.
